FRUTAS DEL HIERRO SAT: Leading Tropical Pineapple Producer in Spain

Es una cooperativa constituida en el año 1998, es un orgulloso hogar de 60 socios productores apasionados por la piña tropical, aguacates, mangos, pitayas y plátanos. Con una impresionante producción anual promedio de 1.000 toneladas, nos enorgullece ser la mayor productora de piña tropical en toda Europa, cuyo objetivo consiste en mejorar la productividad de los cultivos, disminuir el desperdicio de residuos y contaminantes, y mejorar la eficiencia de la mano de obra, la maquinaria, los tratamientos fitosanitarios, los fertilizantes y el consumo de agua.

Our specialisation in tropical pineapple comprises two main varieties: Roja Española, which accounts for 90% of our production, and MD2, which comprises the remaining 10%. The Roja Española, harvested at optimum maturity, stands out for its exquisite sweet and sour taste, in contrast to the MD2, which is sweet and has been genetically modified to reduce acids. These varieties are distinguished not only by their taste, but also by the colour of the flesh: the Roja Española has a white flesh, while the MD2 is yellow. Furthermore, in terms of shape, the Roja Española is more spherical, while the MD2 is more cylindrical.

The tropical pineapple is a fruit that not only delights the palate, but also offers numerous health benefits. It is rich in vitamins C, B1, B9 and E, and contains minerals such as potassium, magnesium and iodine. It also provides an enzyme called bromelain, which aids digestion and has diuretic properties, making it a popular choice in many slimming diets.

The process of planting tropical pineapples is painstaking and costly. Planting one hectare of pineapple on the beautiful island of El Hierro involves a cost of around 35,000 € for a planting density of 40,000 plants. To obtain the first harvest of ripe fruit, approximately 18 months of patience and care are required.

Our distinction lies in the quality we offer, especially in the point of ripeness at which we pick our fruit. The difference in flavour between a ripe pineapple and a green pineapple is noticeable and we are proud to deliver to our customers the authentic, ripe taste of the tropical pineapple.
